How to Survive Winter in Michigan by Yu-Jin Choi

A lot of college students come to Michigan from a different places, and they struggle during the winter because they do not prepare for for it. So there are a few things you'll need to get ready for before it snows in Michigan, especially if you're from a warm climate that doesn't experience winter or a place that does experience winter but isn't as cold as Michigan.

Get a high-quality winter coat to keep you warm

Rather than waiting until it's too late, buy it right away! The best choice of coats in your size and desired style will be gone by mid-November. Find a winter coat in a real store, such as a department or sports goods one. It may seem obvious that a winter jacket is essential throughout the winter months, but the majority of students are unaware of what constitutes a good winter jacket. You should invest in a warm, well-made, waterproof jacket. If the prices are still too high after applying discounts and coupons, head over to your neighborhood Goodwill or secondhand shop and browse the jacket racks.

Plan for the weather ahead

You should always check the weather forecast the day before. There are many reasons, but the first one is that it will tell you what kind of clothes you need to wear. The temperature will help you decide what kinds of clothes to wear and how many layers you ought to put on so that you are warm enough. Second, you have the ability to prearrange how you will get to class each day. If you have a car for commuting but it is snowing tomorrow, it is best to take the school bus instead of driving your car because the roads will be icy and driving could be dangerous.

Invest in some winter gear

Boots, gloves, hats, and scarves are necessary items for the winter season. Getting to class when there is snow on the ground is very difficult, and having winter gear will be of great assistance. There is a wide variety of gloves available, including wool, fingerless, and leather varieties, and the prices are reasonable for all of them. If you have sensitive hands, you should definitely invest in some warm gloves and wear them. You can either make your own reusable and rechargeable hand warmers or purchase some already made. During the winter, the wind can be quite severe. The chilly, dry air is kept out by a scarf, which also makes it easier to breathe.
