Study Spaces I Love (and When to Use Them)

When I first arrived at the University of Michigan, I felt overwhelmed by how big the campus was  and how many places there were to study! Over time, I discovered that finding the right study space can really make a difference in how focused, relaxed, or motivated I feel. Now that I’ve explored different buildings and corners of campus, I want to share some of my favorite study spaces and when I like to use each of them.

Shapiro Library: For Group Projects and Casual Study

Shapiro Library is a popular spot for students who enjoy a more casual, flexible study environment. It’s ideal for group projects, brainstorming sessions, or just getting work done at your own pace. The open seating areas, group study rooms, and proximity to a café make it easy to settle in for a few hours. I often come here when I need to meet with classmates or switch up my routine from quiet solo studying.

Bonus: You can reserve group study rooms online in advance — a great way to ensure you’ll have space during busy weeks!

Ross School of Business: For a Professional Vibe

Even though I am not a business major, I enjoy studying at the Ross School of Business. It has clean, modern spaces and plenty of seating areas with outlets. The atmosphere feels productive, and it motivates me to stay on task. I usually come here when I want to work quietly in a polished environment.

Bonus: Ross has a Starbucks coffee shop on the first floor!

Brandon Center at the Marsal School of Education: For a Supportive and Collaborative Space

The Brandon Center, located in the Marsal Family School of Education, is one of the hidden gems on campus. It has computers, large monitors, comfortable furniture, and helpful tech support. I especially like coming here when I need to do digital work like editing presentations or practicing for class. It’s a friendly space where I always feel welcome.

Bonus: You can borrow equipment like laptop charger and free soda machine & microwave inside Brandon Center.

Science Learning Center: For Science Help and Tutoring

Located in the Chemistry Building, the Science Learning Center is a great resource if you're taking science courses. They offer study spaces, review sessions, and tutoring. It’s a collaborative space where you can meet other students studying the same subjects.

Bonus: You can join study groups for specific courses — these are often led by experienced peer facilitators and are free to join.

The Law Quad: For Sunny Days

On warm days, I love studying outside at the Law Quadrangle. The historic buildings and peaceful courtyard make it a lovely place to read or review notes. I bring a blanket and sit on the grass, which helps me relax while still being productive.

Bonus: Did you know the University of Michigan's Law Quad in Ann Arbor was considered for filming scenes of the Harry Potter movies? 🧙 Yes! 💫

CEW+ Center: For Empowerment and Reflection

The CEW+ Center (Center for the Education of Women+) is a peaceful, welcoming space on Central Campus downtown that supports students of all identities, with a special focus on women, nontraditional students, caregivers, and underrepresented groups. I often come here when I need a quiet space to think, write, or simply recharge. The lounge areas are cozy, and the environment feels calm and affirming.

Bonus: They offer free one-on-one counseling for academic, financial, and personal planning — not just for women!

Everyone studies differently, so I encourage you to explore and see what works best for you. Whether you prefer libraries, outdoor spots, or quiet corners of campus, the University of Michigan has a space for you.

Happy studying, and welcome again to Michigan!
