Staying Active in Ann Arbor

Starting University in a new country can be overwhelming; between focusing on your classes, trying to find your way around and making friends, I bet the last thing on your mind is working out. As someone who loves to move my body everyday, I know how annoying it can be to try to find new and exciting workouts and activities I enjoy. Lucky for you I have compiled a list of all the different ways you can stay active in Ann Arbor! From group workout classes to hiking to club sports to secret hacks, keep reading to find out about all the physical activities The University of Michigan and Ann Arbor has to offer!

  1. UM Gyms

If you enjoy weight lifting, using cardio machines or other forms of working out more independently, the recreational gym facilities are for you! As a student you have access to 3 gym facilities with your M card: The Intramural Sports Building (IM) and Palmer Field (Temporary gym) are located on central campus and the North Campus Recreational Building (NCRB) is located on north campus. These facilities have everything you need such as equipment rentals, weightlifting and cardio areas, basketball courts and even lap swimming pools. I personally go to the sauna on north campus every Sunday for a week reset!

  1. U-M Club Sports and U-M Recreational Sports

Club sports and recreational sports are a great option for students who participated in sports growing up and want to continue playing in college as well as students who want to try something new. Club sport students have the opportunity to compete against other schools and recreational sport students set up friendly games and competitions! Make sure to check the links above for information on each sports practice schedules, tryouts, costs and more!

  1. Group X Workout Classes

U-M offers group fitness classes which are an amazing way to meet people and break the ice on forming friendships. From yoga and stretching to cycling classes and more, group X fitness provides a welcoming community where you can fuel your wellbeing and form meaningful connections through activity!

P.S. Classes are FREE the first 2 weeks of the semester so be sure to sign up!

  1. Popular Fitness Studios

Last but not least, Ann Arbor offers a lot of workout studios that are independent from the university. This is a great option for students who like doing specific group workout classes such as boxing, pilates, barre and more! Now I have a secret just for you guys.. There is an app called ClassPass where you can attend classes across many Ann Arbor Studios through their monthly membership instead of having to commit to one! They offer different memberships and it is a great way to do a little bit of everything! P.S ClassPass offers a FREE 2 week trial (valued at $90) so be sure to check it out. My personal favorite studios are Solidcore and Soul-Cycle
