Live Well, Spend Nothing: U-M’s Zero-Cost Guide
Starting your U‑M experience doesn’t need to be expensive. As someone who values quality, I’ve spent time researching and experiencing the best zero‑cost resources available to students. My time at Michigan has been shaped by generosity and support, so consider this guide a small gift to incoming Wolverines who want to start their journey with a little more financial peace of mind.
Groceries: Maize & Blue Cupboard
Visiting this place each week feels like a treasure hunt. You never know what you’ll find: mangos, avocados, even Lindt chocolates. It’s one of the easiest ways to get high quality groceries for free, and it’s designed to support students without stigma.
Entertainment and Food:
Ann Arbor always has something happening, and many events are completely free, often with food included. Would you like to go ice-skating? Have you ever wondered was it a Halloween Concert? Are you ready to practice your dancing skills in a Bridgerton Ball? There’s a constant rotation of cultural, artistic, and social experiences waiting for you.
MDex: App that highlights most student led activities
Passport to the Arts: Free tickets for paid performances
Happening at U-M: Website with all the information about all the activities across campus
Sports and Nature:
Stay within the U‑M area and you’ll see more squirrels than you ever expected, which are tiny reminders that Ann Arbor is a wonderful place to enjoy nature and stay active. The best part: you can reach almost anywhere by walking or using free public transportation with your MCard.
Top free activities:
Tubing from Argo Park to Gallup Park: the ultimate summer adventure; go with friends and sunscreen for this four-hour float experience.
Nichols Arboretum: perfect for light hiking or picnic dates.
U-M Recreation Facilities: beyond the gym, enjoy the swimming pool, sauna, and rock-climbing wall.
Transportation:
Your MCard gives you free access to Ann Arbor’s public transportation, but carpooling can take you even farther. Don’t hesitate to ask around, U‑M students are remarkably generous, and many are happy to offer rides. It’s a great way to meet new people and have long conversations. Thanks to this kindness, I’ve traveled between Ann Arbor and Chicago many times at no cost.
Furniture:
Every year, graduating students leave Ann Arbor and often give away furniture that’s still in excellent condition. It’s one of the easiest ways to furnish your space for free. The main challenge is transportation, but again, don’t be shy to ask around. Many students are willing to help move items or offer a ride.
